It is time for ITAK to elect a woman as their new leader.
As members of the Tamil Diaspora, we would like to express our thoughts and provide insights on why it would be beneficial for your party to nominate a leader who is a Native Tamil woman.
ITAK party has the potential to secure at least 2 or 3 MPs in the upcoming election, but it primarily represents the Tamils. As a result, the Tamil diaspora is understandably worried about the implications of this new leadership.
ITAK is in need of a new leader. Electing a female leader, especially in Western societies, particularly those led by liberals, would provide crucial support and a listening ear for aspiring Tamil women leaders.
It is evident that there is a growing desire for women’s participation in ITAK politics, and Shanthi MP was a testament to that sentiment.
In order to replace Mavai in the bonus MP position, Sumanthiran suggested choosing a female MP. However, with Mr. Thurarajasingam’s help, the candidate from Amparai ended up becoming the bonus seat MP Mr. Kalaiarasan instead.
It would have been ideal if ITAK had chosen a woman as a bonus seat MP. One suitable candidate for the position could have been Mrs. Raviraj, who could have been a strong contender.
However, it appears that Sumanthiran was uncertain about endorsing her candidacy, possibly due to apprehension. Deep down, he was aware that she had garnered sufficient votes during the previous election to secure victory. However, regrettably, the government’s polling and counting agents worked against her interests.
Now, let us consider Mavai as a potential ITAK leader. The fact is, Mavai is older and may not possess the necessary skills to effectively lead an organization. Additionally, he seems to lack a clear understanding of how to address the political aspirations of the Tamil people.
What about Sri Tharan? It is difficult to trust someone who has displayed a lack of loyalty. He used Suresh Premachandran and EPRLF to secure his position as an MP but changed parties once elected. Furthermore, his behavior and appearance resemble that of a Tamil movie villain, such as MMR Vasu. His actions, like altering his appearance at the FETNA conference in New York, raise questions about his integrity.
Moving on to Sumanthiran, one cannot ignore the fact that he is a Colombo Tamil and in-laws from Sinhalese. His political agenda appears to prioritize the interests of his half-Sinhalease descendants, much like Vigneswaran.
There are concerns about Sumanthiran’s manipulative tendencies and his ability to shape his message to suit different audiences, which raises questions about his sincerity towards the Tamil people. In fact, some people even question whether his own wife trusts him.
Sumanthiran’s lack of leadership qualities is evident, as he seems to possess traits more fitting for an advocate rather than a true leader. It appears that his focus primarily revolves around the interests of the Sinhalese community.
Sumanthiran’s actions, along with Sampanthan, have regrettably impeded the prospects of attaining a positive political resolution following the 2009 massacre of the Tamils, despite the efforts of influential donor countries such as the US, EU, and Japan through the Co-Chair initiative. Their misleading statements, asserting that the Tamils seek a unified, undivided, and indivisible nation, have caused these influential nations to withdraw their dedication to establishing a sovereign Tamil homeland.
Given these considerations, it appears evident that Mrs. Raviraj would be a suitable nominee for ITAK’s leadership position. She is a strong woman who fearlessly confronted Sumanthiran during the election and at the ballot counting station in Jaffna Central College. Her husband’s dedication to Tamil nationalism further enhances her credibility as a candidate.
We hope you will take these points into account when making your decision. We believe nominating a Native Tamil woman as your leader would be a significant step forward for ITAK and contribute to the betterment of Tamil politics in general.
Thank you for your attention.
